Planning a custom garment in Bangkok is easier when the consultation begins with useful information rather than a vague request for “the best suit.” A tailor needs to understand how the garment will be worn, the dates available for fittings, and the choices that matter to the client. A small amount of preparation helps make the discussion more specific without requiring you to arrive with every design detail already decided.
Bring Your Bangkok Dates First
For visitors, the most important information is the time actually available in Bangkok. Bring your arrival and departure dates, note any days when fittings are impossible, and mention whether you will return to Bangkok later.
Class Bespoke planning ranges depend on the garment and construction. Standard jacket construction is generally discussed around 3–5 days, half canvas around 5–10 days and full canvas around 15–30 days. These are planning ranges, not guaranteed completion dates. Explain How the Garment Will Be Used
Tell the tailor whether the commission is for daily business wear, a wedding, black tie, travel, an important presentation or a more relaxed wardrobe. Climate, frequency of wear and formality all affect cloth, construction, lining and styling choices.
It also helps to describe what has or has not worked in previous garments. A jacket may feel restrictive when seated, trousers may sit lower than preferred, or a shirt collar may feel uncomfortable after several hours. These practical observations are often more useful than a list of fashionable details.
Wear or Bring the Right Supporting Pieces
If possible, wear the type of shirt and shoes you expect to use with the garment. Shoe height affects how trouser length and break are evaluated. Shirt collars and cuffs influence how a jacket sits around the neck and sleeves.
For a wedding or formal commission, bring any confirmed information about the dress code, venue and colour coordination. Use Reference Images Carefully
Two or three reference images can clarify proportion, lapel shape, trouser rise or overall mood. They work best as conversation aids, not as a promise that one body, cloth or construction will reproduce another image exactly.
If you already own a garment with a feature you like, bring it or photograph the relevant detail. Equally useful is an example of something you do not like. This helps the tailor distinguish personal preference from a generic trend.
Prepare for Cloth and Construction Questions
You do not need to choose cloth before arriving. Be ready to discuss colour, pattern, weight, weave, breathability, frequency of wear and budget. Bangkok’s warm conditions can make open weaves, lighter cloths and lining choices particularly relevant, but the right selection depends on the garment and intended use. Construction may be basic or fused, half canvas, or full canvas depending on the agreed specification. Lining choices may include full, half-lined or unlined configurations where appropriate. Bring Questions, Not Just Answers
A productive consultation should clarify the exact cloth, construction, garment configuration, fitting plan, expected timing and quotation. Ask how many fittings may be appropriate for your garment and schedule. The number can vary for a first-time or returning client, the construction selected and the adjustments required.
Ask what happens if further adjustments are needed, when the final fitting should take place and whether collection, local delivery or later international delivery is appropriate. Keep the First Consultation Practical
